I’m guilty of always wanting to eat every nut and seed butter that I come across. You’ll see stacks of them in my cupboard – smooth peanut butter, crunchy peanut butter, almond butter, almond coconut butter, cashew nut butter, pumpkin seed butter and tahini. Today I’d like to introduce you to the newest nut and seed butter to be added to my collection. Meet the hemp butter!

Unlike the other jars of nut and seed butters I have sitting in the pantry that blend together in brownness, hemp butter is easy to spot – it’s green! After I got over the green-ness of it, I stuck my nose in the jar, closed my eyes and took a big whiff. Sweet. Woody. A second sniff gave me the scent of freshly bailed hay. I love the outdoors, and it was surprising to get the scent from a little jar of hemp butter. I took another few whiffs just to make sure. I couldn’t wait to stick a spoon in the jar and give it a big lick.

When I finally did, it transported me to the tropics. Maybe the closest thing I can use to describe the taste is fresh coconut flesh. It was earthy and full-bodied. I immediately knew I wanted to put a spoonful of hemp butter into a tropical spinach smoothie recipe.

Here it is! The grassy flavor of the hemp butter peeks out through the sweetness and tartness of the mangoes and pineapples. The coconut water adds a further burst of tropical flavors, and the spinach gives the green smoothie its steady color. I really hope you enjoy this vibrant, healthy and delicious spinach smoothie recipe!
